Even the fancy guys wrote simply, but still quickly. They didn't have time to waste and this is how they wrote. But John Adams used a similar hand, and it's obviously informed by copperplate and shows where Spencer got his ideas.Īll of these people were busy men, writing every day for work and pleasure. Like the letters from John Adams to Abagail. Others of the era and just earlier also interest me. You can see they use a lot of Spencer as their daily influence, though it's not the pure and pretty ornamental style: Most recently the men of the Lewis and Clark expedition, all of whom wrote every night. I was originally inspired by historical journals. A substantial improvement over where I started, and people think it reminds them of old handwriting, which makes me happy. ![]() My hand still sucks, but it is legible and goes quickly enough. I studied the Spencer workbooks a couple of months back, bastardized in a couple of Palmer letters where I couldn't make Ladies Hand loops work for me (that's what style of capitals were taught in the workbooks) and just don't do much of the shading and fancy ornamentation. ![]() Business hand, ladies hand, or whatever bastardization you come up with can go quite quickly and still be very legible. I think people are often confusing the ornamental - calligraphic - Spencerian style with daily use handwriting.
